To minimize the risk of axolotls trying to cannibalize each other, they have to be very well fed, have plenty of decorations in their tank to allow them to break line of sight of one another, and they need to be the same size because a larger axolotl will be likely to try and eat the smaller.

In fact, most of their body is made of cartilage rather than bone. That means they should not be handled unless absolutely necessary. And if you do have to move them out of their tank, do so with a fine mesh net that won't entangle any of their body parts.

You do not need a heater in an Axolotl tank. In warmer climates, you may even need to add a chiller to your tank to keep your water within the optimum temperature range. The ideal temperature for Axolotls is between 60-64° F (16-18° C).

They are carnivorous and will feed on a range of prey including, insects, worms, mollusks, fish and arthropods. Lifespan: In the wild, axolotls generally live 5-6 years but can reach 15 years in captivity. Breeding: Axolotls reach reproductive maturity after their first year of life.

However, you may want to keep your distance if you see an axolotl in the wild. They are typically top predators in their habitats. While axolotls are not known to attack humans, they do eat worms, tadpoles, insects, and some fish. Axolotls are especially aggressive toward each other.

Axolotls are not particularly fond of being touched. Unlike dogs or cats, they do not seek out physical interaction and can become stressed when handled frequently. Axolotls are primarily observational pets, thriving when they are left to explore their environment undisturbed.

The blue axolotl is by far the rarest colour and has a 0.083% chance of spawning, either naturally or via the breeding of adults with other colours.

In three states and the District of Columbia, it is illegal to own an axolotl. California and Maine both make axolotls illegal because they are considered “detrimental animals” that pose a threat to native salamander species in the states.

Axolotls tend to be fairly bold and are perfectly content to move about their tank as they're being watched by their humans.
