Factions - Starfield Guide - IGN (2024)

Like previous Bethesda games in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls series, Starfield contains a host of different groups and Factions that you can encounter, join, or betray as you play through the game's story. A tentative peace has been brokered after the end of the Colony War, but there are still many unresolved conflicts that the player will be able to take part in.

You can join all factions in Starfield. If you're given the option, go for it! There is one exception, but you can still benefit from the factions until you're forced to make the decision. You can see the spoiler details hidden below.

Constellation

• Headquarters: The Lodge - New Atlantis, Jemison (Alpha Centauri System)

Founded in 2275, Constellation is a group of legendary space explorers who seek one thing above all else - unlocking the great mysteries of the galaxy, and uncovering evidence of true alien civilizations.

By 2330, which much of the galaxy rapidly becoming explored, interest in the group had begun to wane, with most of the populace concluding that there was nothing left to find in the vastness of space. However, the discover of a mysterious alien artifact left to the groups renewed purpose to uncover the mystery of possible alien life somewhere in the galaxy, which is where your character comes in.

Constellation is tied to Starfield's main questline, which you will automatically join at the end of the first main mission, One Small Step, at which point you are free to make use of The Lodge as a home base with a free room and an assortment of crafting workshops.

UC Vanguard (United Colonies)

• Headquarters: MAST Building - New Atlantis, Jemison (Alpha Centauri System)

The United Colonies is one of two major governmental organizations in Starfield, spanning a large stretch of the galaxy surrounding the Sol System and the "central" systems. A centralized republic, the United Colonies has a large military starfleet force, and was once locked in a grim war with the Freestar Collective during the Colony War, though the two factions have entered into an uneasy truce.

Ordinary citizens can enlist with the UC Vanguard to help give aid to the United Colonies in a variety of ways, including assisting against piracy, helping colonies, and hauling much needed cargo -- and can earn their UC citizenship in the process. However, what may start as a routine check-in on an unassuming colony may quickly escalate into defending humanity from a terrifying threat.

Freestar Rangers (Freestar Collective)

• Headquarters: The Rock - Akila City, Akila (Cheyenne System)

The Freestar Collective is one of the two major governmental organizations in Starfield. Though much smaller than the United Colonies, the Freestar Collective operates as a libertarian confederation of planets and star systems that wish to run themselves in a more "wild west" collective, and fought against the United Colonies to keep their independence - at a price.

Though their military might is not as pronounced as the United Colonies, their Freestar Rangers are committed to serving as protective and investigative force to keep the peace in the settled systems. Those who prove their mettle as arbiters of justice and apply to join the Freestar Rangers, and uncover conspiracy and threats against the colonists of the Freestar systems.

Ryujin Industries

• Headquarters: Ryujin Industries - Neon, Volii Alpha (Volii System)

Though the planet of Volii Alpha is under the protection of the Freestar Collective, it was the efforts of the Ryujin Industries that developed the highly illicit drug called Aurora that the city of Neon became most known for. Those looking to make their mark in the corporate world of cutthroat business and espionage should consider applying for a job with the secretive company, as you just may have what it takes to make it to the top.

Crimson Fleet

• Headquarters: The Key - (Kryx System)

Known as an semi-organized group of space pirates, the Crimson Fleet have risen to prominence over the years, and have now become a threat to both the United Colonies and Freestar Collective as they strike out into the settled systems.

While they call no planet their home, their main base can instead be found on a massive star station called The Key, orbiting the planet that was once home to the icy supermax prison called The Lock from which the Fleet's leader broke out of.

Whether you fancy yourself a life of piracy, or wish to assist the United Colonies SysDef in going deep undercover to bring them down, both options await as opportunity knocks to put you in contact with the legendary group.
